VENT DE SABLE
En 1960, dans le nord de l’Algérie, la guerre battait son plein.
Mais à 1400km du champ de bataille, un autre projet du sable saharien : «la force de frappe française» ! Cette force-là, aux yeux du général De Gaulle, est plus importante que la guerre elle-même. Dans le Touat, puis dans le Hoggar, des officiers et des scientifiques installaient le premier centre français d’expérimentation atomique.
Outre les scientifiques et les militaires de carrière, la réalisation de ce gigantesque projet nécessitait une main d’œuvre abondante, on alors utilisé les soldats du contingent et la population locale, peu chère et discrète…
SAND STORM
At the end of the fifties, in the North of Algeria the war is for its maximum.But in more than one thousand kilometers of the battlefield, a gigantic project appears from some Saharan sand: the atom bomb!
Officers soldiers by profession and scientists install the first French Atomic base. More than ten thousand persons are going to work on it, among them foot soldiers and plentiful local manpower are put in contribution.
On February 13th, 1960, at 07:04 am exploded the first French atom bomb. The city of Reggane is fifty km of the explosion. All in all, the French army proceeded to seventeen shootings: four atmospheric and thirteen underground. explosions The clouds of volatile and erratic radioactive dust affected all western Africa.
Half a century later, sites are not yet secured neither disinfected, so exposing the nomadic populations to the dangers of the persistent radioactivity …
